A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Lovely city. Worth a visit. The traffic planners need a review of their traffic infrastructure. Currently only motor vehicles are provided for. Chester has some great history, its cathedral is definitely worth a visit. The city walls give a great view over the city & there are many great bars & restaurants to choose from. A walk or bike ride along the river is also great for passing an hour or two. Chester has something for everyone but it can get busy so allow time for parking. I feel in the full day I spent there I saw all I wanted to of the city - I walked the 2 miles of the city walls, spent time in the Cathedral, went on a river boat trip, marvelled at the architecture and ate at a wonderful Turkish restaurant in the evening. The hotel in all was fabulous. Unfortunately the use of spa and pool facilities was poor and miss lead as they wouldn’t allow any one under the age of 16 to use. A walk around Chester Walls is a must to get an overall view of Chester. Highly recommend Chester Cathedral & their at heights tour. Absolutely stunning. Cafes, Bars & Restaurants in abundance. The location isn’t far from Chester City Centre - we walked to and from it several times in our visit so having free parking at the hotel was really convenient.
