Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked...
We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked and paid for through booking.com had shut down. So this was a very stressful start to our stay. We had to find and pay for alternative accommodation out of town as all hotels were booked. Durham city has some obvious highlights like the cathedral, but we preferred the more intimate National Trust Crook Hall Garden near the city centre. Park and Ride buses essential, don't bring a car in. Beamish Open Air Museum is half an hour north. We spent 7 hours there and still missed lots of it. Tickets are expensive for one day but cover 12 months so we'll be back. Shildon Locomotion Museum (NRM) is great for railway fans. A reunion trip to one of my favourite places.
A reunion trip to one of my favourite places. So we loved it all. The cabins were meticulously clean and had everything you need for a comfortable, relaxing stay. What Mark has done with the cabins is wonderful! Location is great for getting into Durham city centre and having a garden centre a short walk away was very handy for breakfast.
