We stayed in Carisbrooke, a bus ride to the centre of Newport, which is a great base for buses to all parts of the island. Ideal location for exploring the Island. The variety of good real ale pubs and eating places were a lot less than when I was first in Newport around 15 or so years ago. We tried several pubs, and a tea room/bakery, but on balance the best were not in Newport. The best for drinks - beer at least and wine - was the Newport Ale House; and for food and drink, the Union Inn Cowes, the Red Lion Freshwater, the Bargeman's Rest Newport, the Castle Inn Newport, and top of the list the Highdown Inn Totland Bay ... but there are more to try when we next go for a week of exploration and hiking!Guest review byDominicUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Not the most exciting town but a great centre for visiting the isle of wight by bus as most routes start and finish there and the buses are reliable - I used it as a base for walking the first half of the coastal path. It also has a reasonable choice of eating placesGuest review bySummerhayes - 8.0

It is an interesting converted historic warehouse building, ideal for visiting Newport and the island. Lovely relaxing view from the lounge balcony overlooking the tidal old quayside, birdlife and the Arts centre. Only minutes walk to good pubs, restaurants, shops, bus station and supermarkets. Mosquitos was not a problem at all when we used plug in repellant. Kitchen was fully equipped including non stick frying pan and sharp knifes. Beds are very firm but toppers making them very comfy. Extra beds in living room are very useful. Very quiet place, perfect to rest and not far from Newport.
