Onomichi is a picturesque and walkable city with lots of charm. You can stroll the vintage shotegai, visit the art museum, enjoy a snack at Onomichi U2, take a temple walk, ride the ropeway, and of course, biking the Shimanami Kaido. The people are friendly and the food and shopping are great.

Because I got in late from doing the big bike ride over from Imabari, I was left with little time or energy to explore Onomichi. However, I did do some of the temple tour in the morning and it was excellent. I recommend taking the "ropeway" (I'd call it a cable car) to the hilltop and work your way down. I'd love to come back and explore more of this interesting little town.

Onomichi was a quiet town with lots of small alleys to explore. One full day should be enough to get a taste of the location for younger travelers. But two days at the town should also be good if you would like to take your time or if there are elderly in the group.

Such a beautiful little town with really friendly residents who genuinely welcome and enjoy travellers. Lots to do in the day, a bit quite at night though so don’t rely on there being restaurants open for dinner. I loved Onomichi. I only spent one day and one night there before beginning the Shimanami Kaido cycle, but I wish I’d stayed and relaxed a bit more is this wonderful town. The temple walk was worth the views, cat alley was unique and worth seeing, I loved just grabbing a coffee or pastry and sitting on the pier to enjoy the view.

    Expect lot's of walking.

Expect lot's of walking. There is something to see around every corner - or up every hill. Weather permitting it is a must. Not sure it would be much fun in the rain, unless you love shopping and eating sushi :-)

urashima INN - GANGI is a lovely hotel in the gorgeous town of Onomichi. I stayed at the hotel in order to rent a bike and cycle the Shimanami Kaido. It is ideally based for the town which is 5 minute or so walk away for the ferries to Mukaishima Island and for the bike rental vendors too. The room sizes are a little small and probably a bit of a tight squeeze for two people but, as I was staying on my own it was more than adequate for me. The staff were also very helpful and welcoming. I will certainly return again next year.

Booked this hotel to do the Shimanami Kaido Cycling route since the bike rental shop is nearby. The hotel is also very close to the JR train station (~5 mins), and offers a number of complimentary things, such as free tea, or you can buy snacks at the nearby convenience store and use the communal fridge. The facilities were very clean, and the showers had good water pressure and steady supply of warm water. They also have lockers which you can use while looking around Onomichi.

The house was renovated by the owner himself and you can feel the hard work he has put into this place! We stayed for three nights in a double room with shared bathroom. The shared facilities are spotless and offer good privacy. Onomichi is a small town and although the Hotel is not in the center everything is in walking distance. We enjoyed a lovely evening at the bar chatting with Cho, the owner and fellow guests. Hopefully we can come back one day.

The location was good, with a nice sea view. The room was comfortable, although a little bit dated looking in places. The room was clean. The Japanese breakfast was really good. The staff were friendly and helpful in arranging the 'takuhaibin' luggage delivery service from this hotel to another location.

Great stay. Very comfortable family-run business. Our host was very helpful though we didn't speak Japanese. It's on the Mukashiama Island side of Onomichi so if you are on bikes do the temple walk before you cross over.
