I found Kaka Point had a lovely peaceful community vibe.
I found Kaka Point had a lovely peaceful community vibe. The weather turned during my short stay there, but that didn't spoil my walk out to the lighthouse at Nugget Point. It was extremely windy with very rough seas, which made me appreciate how hard shipping must have been back in the day.

Beautiful spot in the Catlins. Lovely beach and forest walk. A stones throw throw from the Nugget Point Lighthouse and Roaring Bay penguin hide. Great affordable accommodation at Nugget View Kaka Point Motel and celiac friendly dinner at The Point Restaurant and Bar.

Kaka point is a perfect base for visiting the Catlins if you have a week because then you can make day trips to the many waterfalls, beaches, lighthouses and historical sites without rushing or getting exhausted. Kaka point itself is peaceful and wildly beautiful at this time of year but you need to go prepared as there is no proper store and only one eating venue which is quite expensive.

The whole of the Catlins is a treat for locals and international travellers alike. Be captivated by the beauty of the landscape and wildlife, while soaking up the quaint, sleepy town feel of Kaka Point. New Zealand has wonderful wildlife and environmental protection laws for native flora and fauna. If you're looking for an ethical way to see animals in nature, this is the way to do it. Please respect the laws and rules about Interacting with any animals or scenery - this ensures it is a place to treasure for years to come.

A lovely beach with a cafe/shop/restaurant so ideal for families. Easy to reach nugget point from there. Bear in mind it’s at the eastern end of the Catlins so if you want to explore places further west, eg Curio Bay, you will have quite a drive. On the other hand Balclutha is only a 15 min drive which is handy for stores and food shopping.

Beautiful location and very close to Nugget Point Lighthouse which is a must see for all travellers. Would have liked to stay longer and try swimming. The beaches looked very inviting. Clifftop views around the lighthouse are breathtaking

The batteries in all the remotes were flat. The layout of the flat need to be looked at. Definitely needs a heat pump for the size of the apartment.
Bed was comfy enough.
The tiles in the bathroom and in front of the kitchenette is very cold!!! Could do with a rug or two. The view is spectacular!! (I mean it's Kaka Point!)
Jenny was amazing in organizing everything even though she was in Aussie. They've got a beautiful place for cheap. Could be a $250 place with a few minor adjustments.

Could not fault it - from the great amenities, easy parking, beds made up with electric blankets, plush carpet, generous seating, well equipped kitchen, and plenty of spreads and milk in the fridge. It was VERY much appreciated when the host messaged us and advised us to buy food supplies out of town, since Kaka Point’s only store would be closed on the Sunday when we arrived.

Excellent apartment, generous bathroom and nice kitchenette. Superb view. Very comfortable and very clean. The host even provided a basic breakfast as there are very limited options in Kaka Point. Would have loved to stay longer.
