Harz Highlights

Visit Quedlinburg, Germany’s first capital

This well preserved medieval town is home to over 1,300 half-timber houses and the impressive Burgberg castle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is framed by the Harz Mountains.

Be charmed by Wernigerode and Brocken

Brocken is the highest peak in northern Germany, and at its foot lies the charming town of Wernigerode. Walk through the forest to see the town’s timber-frame houses.

Try a glass of Schierke Feuerstein

For a typical Harz drinking experience, sample a glass of Schierke Feuerstein. Produced in the town of Schierke, this herby liqueur has a distinctly bitter taste.

Soak in views atop the Roßtrappe

Roßtrappe is a granite crag that looms 1,325 feet above the Bode Gorge. You can hike, drive or take a chairlift to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular scenery.

Sample a local delicacy: Harzer cheese

You can't visit the Harz without tasting the local Harzer cheese. This sour-milk cheese is made from low-fat curd, and is typically served on hearty rye bread.

All aboard the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway

Steam locomotive trains run on this railway, which traverses some of Harz’s most scenic areas. Ride to Brocken’s summit, then enjoy a beer with stunning views as your backdrop.

Christmas comes to life in Quedlinburg

Discover the magic of Christmas in the historic town of Quedlinburg. Advent is celebrated with decorated alleyways, seasonal music recitals and beautiful shop window displays.

Let Walpurgis Night bewitch you

According to legend, witches would gather on the Brocken during the night on every April 30th to celebrate spring. Today, this tradition is celebrated with bonfires, pranks and the locals dressing up as witches.

Admire Goslar’s carved half-timber houses

Wind through the cobblestone streets of this ancient mining town to discover the intriguing wood carvings on the houses. Stop by Rammelsberg Mine, which operated for over 1,000 years.

Braunlage: ski and spa-lovers' heaven

Braunlage Wurmberg Ski Resort is the perfect place to enjoy some powder. Enjoy winter sports by day, and relaxing health retreats by night. The sauna is calling your name!

I'm giving this location 10 stars because I feel like Europeans would find it so - it's a cultural thing as an American to expect different levels of comfort. However, I found our room to be rather cramped and the last room on the top floor, the furthest away from the lobby in what might have originally been the attic - the windows were dormered. The beds were spartan in that sleeping on them was like sleeping on stone. My hips began aching by the third day. The pillows were meager, half size. I had to ask twice before they brought us some extras but in the hotel's defense, my German is deplorable, so it's quite possible I couldn't make myself understood. The bathroom was pretty much the same as any hotel in the US, very small - the bathtub and shower felt like bathing in a coffin. I feel like many of these complaints wouldn't bother most Europeans: they're tougher than Americans are at this point. So I didn't really dock the hotel any points on my ratings for the uncomfortable aspects of the rooms. The breakfast was amazing, and my son and I really enjoyed it every morning. The hotel was perfectly located. We're not Christmas people, so when we booked we had thought the location would be rather empty but to our surprise it was Christmas Market and teeming with people. The parking situation was overly complicated and rather expensive in my mind (16 euros per day) but once again, American coming into a situation with expectations that are probably culturally inappropriate. The bar was nice and relatively affordable and Andreas the bartender was a highlight.

We enjoyed our stay at the park. Our kids loved the swimming pool and we really enjoyed the sauna (especially the great 'aufguss' sessions!) . There's a lot to see and do for all ages. The park itself is nicely landscaped and the facilities are clean and decent. Friendly staff and a nice mountain view.

It was a perfect short stay in proximity to the Therme and the main areas of the town in a cosy hotel which surprised us with excellent own spa facilities and easy adjacent parking. Fantastic town to walk around with oodles of old buildings tastefully maintained/restored. Plenty of opportunity to shop, although is seems this time of year, late September, things are slowing down and not every place is open. Had a great meal at the Zum Bar Hotel, you'll want to dine here at least once!

Goslar is a surprisingly beautiful town, boasting thousands of well-preserved medieval houses in its charming Old Town. Its meticulously maintained architecture makes it a unique destination in the Harz mountain region of Germany, offering a perfect blend of history and natural beauty. Take a bus to Oker, where you'll discover plenty of beautiful hiking routes waiting to be explored. Braunlage has a lot to offer, nice walks, and we loved the monster roller activity on the mountain. Puppe's bar is a really nice place to drink. And you have a great choice of nice restaurants. Reservation is required, especially the best rated restaurants on trip advisor are usually completely occupied. You can do some nice shopping too. We visited Quedlinburg, Halberstadt, Goslar, bad Harzburg, Thale and Weringerode, all very beautiful cities/villages. The roads in between these cities are beautiful.

If you want nature for your holiday, then Ilsenburg is the right choice! Mountains, trees, fantastic view from top! For hiking it’s one of the best route! Unfortunately, there’s also part of nature that, most of the trees are affected by the fest or plague so you will see that a lot of trees are dying or dead and some mountain are bald! Anyhow, we did hiking down and up till Brocken! And up there , 1142 m high is breathtaking👍😊

Town is full of history with medieval houses and a hilltop castle that is very popular for German tourists. English is not common, especially in restaurant or their menus, so sometimes difficult for non-German speakers. Great place to visit Harz Mountains hiking areas and the Titan-RT suspension bridge and Dam and the Wendefurth reservoir for boating. Harz Railway Steam train to the Broken Mountain.
