FAQs about hotels in Tuscany

A Divine Comedy for Body and Soul

From ancient origins and Etruscan traditions, to tasty food and sandy beaches, Tuscany is the wonderful birthplace of Dante and home to the genius of Leonardo’s work. A place that makes you fall in love with culture and the art of living.

Tuscany has endless stories to reveal: little picturesque towns like San Gimignano contrast with coves and beaches in the Follonica Gulf and Argentario Mount. The scenic green hills near Siena, Elba Island and Napoleon, the opulence of Forte dei Marmi, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Arezzo, Lucca...it's packed full of things to see.

Heavenly angels lift the soul in beautiful churches decorated with skill and art, while back on earth, luxury Tuscany hotels and restaurants feed the body with indulgent servings of the best Chianina meat, the tastiest olive oil, and countless bottles of Chianti or Brunello.

The best of Florentine Renaissance art is packed into the Piazza della Signoria, Galleria degli Uffizzi and the magnificent Duomo cathedral. When looking for hotels in Tuscany, near Florence there are guest houses and B&B’s where you can still soak up the tranquil atmosphere and the beautiful landscapes captured in famous paintings of nymphs and deities.

Booking.com has some great hotel deals to enable you to enjoy and discover a rich experience of senses and ideas, and to fill your body and soul with divine Tuscany!

Florence is a very nice place for people who love art.

Florence is a very nice place for people who love art. Even in October, however, there were a lot of tourists and the crowds in the galleries are tiring. We had previously bought a Firenze card online, which allows you to visit many museums in 72 hours, but first you need to validate it and get a plastic card, and the organization for this is bad and we lost two hours: Uffizi opens at 8:15, but you can validate the card at the earliest at 9, after which you wait in a long line again. The restaurants in the city center are numerous and affordable, be sure to try the ice cream. I was very impressed by the church of Santa Croce and the Palaco Piti.

A lovely city and so compact you can walk everywhere.

A lovely city and so compact you can walk everywhere. Highlights were a walk on the city walls that takes you around Pisa where you get a very different view point. Plus it’s less crowded. About 3.5kms which ends near the river, then an 20 minute walk back. But you can meander, have a coffee or an gelato on your way. And of course, the leaning tower that is so famous! I would recommend getting a combined ticket to see the tower, the cathedral, the Baptistry and the camposanto etc Amazing architecture and artwork. There are so many restaurants for your aperativos and meals that you are spoilt for choice. Really enjoyed the atmosphere.

    Great and interesting city.

Great and interesting city. Been there before, many years ago, and wanted to see it again. The piazza Il Campo is fantastic - the most odd and beautiful square in Italy and maybe in Europe. Go up to the top of the tower and see it from above, amazing! Just to bad that the horserace Il Palio was in July and August, that would have been a great experience.

I like the city inside the wall very much for its slow pace, few cars and little traffic, and the walking areas to various points of interest. I don't like the enormous tourist groups which seem to be getting larger and larger each year. They take up a great deal of walking space on Lucca's narrow streets. The size of the tourist groups should be limited to a number that doesn't impact other tourists and residents as much as it does now!

San Gimignano is a medieval town which is very popular with Italian tourists as well as other EU/US visitors. It's like stepping back in time as everywhere is so original and dripping with age. There are plenty of shops selling quality foods, ceramics, fabrics, art, bakeries and even a potter who will make a pot in front of your eyes - in fact everything you can think of! Plenty of nice restaurants from simple pizzerias to Michelin starred will cater for every taste and budget. There are a number of old towers you can climb which will give you a wonderful birds eye view of the surrounding Tuscan countryside, but if you don't want to climb then a leisurely stroll around the ancient streets is a cultural treat.

There's not a lot there. And when the cruise ships come in, it gets manic with people getting on busses. We'd a BAD experience with the inspectors that come on buses. They home in on tourist's, when they checked our tickets that we did on the card machine, though not our fault, we wanted 2 tickets, it gave us 1 and the called us crimenals

    A very attractive town.

A very attractive town. The beaches are superb, but unless you head out of town you need to go into a beach club. There are no free access beaches in town. Some hotels have an arrangement with a beach club for free or discounted access for guests, so it is worth checking this if you intend to use the beaches. It can cost typically EUR30-40 for 2 chairs, a sunbed and an umbrella. They don't offer reduced rates until 3-4pm. That will add up after a few days. The restaurants are OK but nothing special. Most of them serve the same food, which can get boring. We ate in our hotel restaurant more than we usually would, but the quality and variety of food on offer was better than any outside restaurant we tried. Apart from the beach, shops and walking up and down the promenade, there is not much to actually do in Viarregio, so you may want to get out on some day trips. Pisa and Luca are accessible by train, although we found them both to be disappointing (especially Luca - what a dump!). We found the train service a bit hit and miss, although it is cheap. Consider hiring a car if you plan to get out of Viareggio. If you pick up and drop off at the airport, it will also be useful for airport transfers.
